Nice,

Its just that its so difficult to trust someone, much more easier to distrust. Simply because trust takes a long time to form, distrust, one incident is enough.

First of all, lets get this straight. Do not degrade the lot of the normal stranger one would meet by linking him/her with an autodriver. True, there may be a few good autodrivers around. There was this one guy who once took some 3 bucks off my fare because neither of us had change, when i was in 7th std, i think. But most of them are cheap, unscrupulous b@$t@r&s.
Take the guy i had the misfortune of being a fare of just this morning. He said he would take 20 bucks off my fare if i let him pick up another passenger on the way. I didn't see a problem. He takes me to his auto which is parked right next to this stinking garbage dump with population of rats = inverse(population of females in IITM). He then takes 10 bucks from me, lest i run away while he's gone, and disappears, without explanation, for about 30 minutes!!! Finally he returns with 2 hefty buggers and loads of luggage, leaving no space for my bag, which is then unceremoniously placed under this driver's feet in the front! Then i get a fairly comprehensive education of Chennai roads at 5:30 am, and on finally getting to campus, this a$$^*!e has the b@!!$ to bargain for ten more bucks!!
And once the chap, after charging 2.5 times the meter fare, started abusing very loudly and vulgarly in front of my apartments for an extra ten bucks!
I dunno...i remember way more 'untrustworthy' auto-drivers than good ones.
Here's a 12th comment to a post of the blog which nobody except shankin reads

I completely agree with u Shankar that we can safely trust MOST of the strangers. One of the main reasins why people suspect strangers is bcos of all the stories they would have heard. It is a fact that ppl always tend to talk about their bad experiences with strangers and they invariably fail to mention or even recollect how some unknown person had helped them the other day.Negative emotions always spread quickly.
Whenever I go to Bangalore, somebody always asks me how I manage to go out in Chennai without the knowledge of Tamail. They seem to think of native Tamilians here as very unkind. But both u and me know that this is a misconception.Whenever I have gone out ppl have helped me a great deal.

By the way if u still have'nt figured out that anonymous comment was by Gandhe.

S.Manohar

Nice post, Shankin. I agree with Mahesh. The quality of your posts is increasing with every post.

I agree with Buswi too. There is a lot of good in the world (which I am grateful for), but we don't notice it because it is fogged by the (outnumbered according to me but still making a great effect) anti-social elements.

Unfortunately, our judgement of strangers is highly determined by what we see them as. It is easy to spot a bad guy, a ruffian in a crowd. On the other hand, searching into the minds and hearts of people to discern if they are nice and kind, is close to impossible.

Shankin, you remember that I had told you in the first year that I had seen you somewhere in Bangalore before coming here? That stranger in the auto was me.... I indeed was doing some small research in a medicinal-lab.

I guess most people are honest, by nature, for it is repulsive to us to be otherwise. Unfortunately, as always, the silent, nice, honest majority are not as visible as the minority, who never miss a chance to con, trick or deceive other people.
I guess all such heart-warming incidents don't really mean much, for it is not as if the majority of people are bad, it is just that they rarely show themselves at the right places and times, or, alternatively the "bad guys" are the ones who usually show up.
